Helping to Care for Cameroon’s Orphans

A Moses Lake resident since 1991, Autumn Brown, is working to start a project that will benefit hundreds of orphans in the West African country of Cameroon. Along with many reliable counterparts, Autumn will be traveling to Cameroon to distribute much needed clothing, medical and school supplies to over 200 orphans.

Autumn, daughter of Dr. Doyle and Jeanne Brown, is a 2005 graduate of Moses Lake High School and received her AA degree from BBCC also in 2005 while participating in the running start program. She graduated in 2007 from American University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in International Studies and one month after graduation she entered the US Peace Corps. She was sent to the Western Province of Cameroon for 27 months where she worked in collaboration with a local microfinance institution, worked in small enterprise development, promoted banking and savings programs, taught English and Business classes, worked with women’s groups, and set up a scholarship program for young people to receive a better education.

She is currently working in Washington, D.C. for a non-profit organization that works in over 40 different countries on large development projects, mostly in health and agriculture.

In a few weeks she will be starting a Master’s program at the London School of Economics in Comparative Politics, Democracy and Development. Before she begins her schooling in London, she has plans to return to Cameroon where she is collaborating with contacts she made as a Peace Corps volunteer to help bring many needed supplies to orphanages that lack sufficient resources. She and her mother have embarked on a campaign to raise funds to assist these young children and those dedicated people who already use much of their own resources to care for them.

Autumn is planning to be in Cameroon from Sept 8-18th to purchase the necessary items and deliver them to several different orphanages in need.

This is one of the orphanages where Autumn delivered food, clothes,
school supplies and medicines.
